When William had qualified as a journeyman blacksmith he married Jane Bone and they went of to Newcastle to find work. I know from my knowledge of British history that 1840 was when most towns were embarking on putting in piped water supplies. William put his ability to work with metals to change from being a blacksmith to being a whitesmith or in today’s terms a plumber. He would also have been able to set the bells into the towers of the vast number of new churches that were being built at that time. He would have prospered.
